Such fun to watch grow. Commonly known as Balloon Flower, this perennial has buds that look like balloons that gradually inflate. The buds will burst open into star-shaped flowers!
Commonly referred to as Balloon Flowers, Platycodon grandiflorus have intriguing, balloon-shaped buds actually pop open to reveal wide-petaled star-shaped blooms in late summer. 'Fuji Blue' is a beautiful cultivar with periwinkle-blue, long-lasting flowers. Easily grown and pest free, they are a must for every cottage garden or perennial border. Balloon Flower is slow to emerge in the spring so care is needed to prevent accidentally digging it up.
New plants may need a year or two to perform well and once planted it does not like to be moved. Stake the plants before they are flowering size because once they fall over, they usually break when straightened. Like Poppies they can be used as cut flowers however the stem must be seared with a flame before it is used in arrangements.
