Fritillaria imperialis 'Rubra' is one of Elke's Faves this season...here's why:
This the kind of flower that makes you stop and say, "Whoa, I need that in my garden!" It's the rockstar of spring flowers, standing tall and proud and stealing the show. So, if you want your garden to be the hottest spot on the block, grab some Fritillaria Rubra and let the party begin!
Elke Wehinger
Rubra loves rich well-drained soil in a sunny location. It repels deer, squirrels and rabbits and produces a tall crown of foliage with eye catching orangey-red flowers.
These plants also sport a leafy crown of bright green foliage and will definitely turn a few heads in the garden. One of the first plants to be cultivated, illustrations of it date back as far as 1610! A word of caution, however, these amazing plants do give off a strong musky odour so we suggest planting them in a perennial border or near shrubs where the scent will not be objectionable. Be sure to provide good drainage as Fritillarias are somewhat sensitive to water retentive soil.
